Abstract

The aim of this work is to identify the species belonging to the families Vespidae and Eumenidae of the superfamily Vespoidea, which inhabit in Aegean region of TURKEY in the years 1979-1982. As a result of the thorough investigation of 6350 specimens collected during the course of this study, the genera and species belonging to the families Vespidae and Eumenidae were identified. The diagnostic keys which include both the species found in this work and the other probable species were determined. The body coloring of the specimens which were identified were explained in detail and their distinguishing characters were specified as structural and coloring. Besides, it has been investigated whether that species have color variation for that region or not. For each species the site of collection the altitud of the site, the date, the collector, and the indentification of the sex were given and the spreading of the species with the region were illustrated on the map. The significant body parts for diagnostic key and the coloring were shown on drawings obtained by a special device attached to the binocular. As a result of this study belonging to the family Vespidae, the genera Vespa LINNAEUS; Vespula THOMSON; Polistes LATREILLE; belonging to the family Eumenidae, the genera Eumenes LATREILLE; Nortonia SAUSSURE; Alastor LEPELETIER; Pterochilus KLUG; Rhynchium SPINOLA; Odynerus LATREILLE and the subgenera Ancistrocerus WESMAEL and Lionotus SAUSSURE and belonging to these genera and subgenera the species Vespa orientalis FABRICIUS; Vespa crabro LINNAEUS; Vespula germanica (FABRICIUS); Vespula vulgaris (LINNAEUS); Polistes gallicus LINNAEUS; Eumenes arbustorum PANZER; Eumenes unguiculus VILLERS; Eumenes pomiformis (FABRICIUS); Eumenes picteti SAUSSURE; Nortonia intermedia SAUSSURE; Alastor atropos LEPELETIER; Rhynchium oculatum FABRICIUS; Ancistrocerus parietum LINNAEUS; Lionotus innumerabilir SAUSSURE were found to be present. Among the species identified, Eumenes picteti SAUSSURE; Nortonia intermedia SAUSSURE; Alastor atropos LEPELETIER; Lionotus innumerabilis SAUSSURE are the new registrations from TURKEY. For each species found, the distinguishing coloring and structural proporties were indicated. Upon investigation of the color and texture of the parts of the bodies of these species according to their spreading in the research area, it has been concluded that they do not show a regional variation and the variation within the species are particularly individual.
